Reflection: I’m writing this as I sit on my red eye flight to London. It honestly doesn’t feel quite real yet that I’ll be studying in London for the next semester. I am very excited for this new adventure and can’t wait to meet new people and see new places.
Here are a few of my notes and tips for preparing for your study abroad: Make sure your passport is up to date It’s recommended you don’t travel with a passport that will expire in the next six months. I had to get a new passport for my study abroad. While my passport came in within two weeks of submitting my application, it can often take longer so be sure you get this done early if you know you want to go abroad. Attend the SAC Mandatory Pre-Departure Sessions When going abroad with SAC, you must attend 3-4 mandatory meetings. There is a charge if you miss one. In these meetings, you’ll get to meet your cohort and faculty resident, go over information about the program and the university you’ll be visiting, and general culture awareness/tips for adjusting to a new environment. Keep up with University of Roehampton To-Do’s Once you are accepted into the UH SAC program, you’ll need to apply as a study abroad student on the University of Roehampton’s portal.
Book your flight early My situation was a bit unique since I was helping my sister move into her college in Chicago and went from Chicago to London.
Organize your finances and how you’re accessing money while abroad Do your research! Not all credit cards and debit card companies work in the United Kingdom and Europe. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted. Be sure to notify all banks, credit and debit card companies of your travel plans!! I am using the Capital One Venture credit card, but any credit card with no foreign transactions fees is ideal. Being all the way in Europe, I'm definitely planning on traveling outside of the United Kingdom. This factored into my decision to open a travel credit card. Don't be afraid to shop around and see what kind of deals companies might be promoting. Capital One, Chase, and Bank of America often have bonus incentives (extra points) when you sign up with them. If you have a low or no credit score, see if you can open a card with a parent or get added to one of their accounts. To access cash while abroad, a debit card can be ideal. The Charles Schwab debit card reimburses transaction fees at the end of each month. Be sure to also exchange some money beforehand at your local bank (they usually have the best rates). The University of Roehampton recommends $100-$200 worth of pounds (UK currency). I also suggest getting some Euros as well if you're planning on traveling to EU countries. Before you leave, make a budget so you have an idea of how much money you'll need access to during your semester abroad. Figure out your phone plan Roehampton provides you with a UK SIM card that you can pay for data, minutes, and texts. If using this SIM card, check with your provider to see how best to manage your current plan (whether to suspend or cancel). Packing Link to my packing list. I took one check bag, one carry on, and one personal item Packing cubes and rolled clothes are your best friends :) Miscellaneous - Make sure you know or have access to necessary usernames and passwords - Leave information about your university and where you’re staying at home with parents, family, or someone you trust

Choosing to study abroad during college is a big decision, but it can be one of the most meaningful experiences of your four years. It’s the chance to see the world, explore your passions, and experience independence in a whole different way. When else are you going to get the chance to LIVE in another country and EXPERIENCE another culture without having to move there completely? There are two programs at UH: 1. UH Study Abroad Center (SAC) 2. Manoa International Exchange (MIX) Things to consider when picking a program/country/school Application timing SAC requires application one semester before; MIX requires applications one year before desired time abroad Semester or year-long program Course equivalencies For business students, London SAC program is one of few SAC programs with great major course equivalencies Cost SAC has you pay your abroad university's tuition and fees PLUS UH SAC fees; through MIX you pay Manoa tuition and fees Type of program SAC you go with a group of UH students and a faculty; MIX is an exchange program where you go independently (unless you know other students applying to same school) Grades SAC letter grades transfer so your GPA is impacted; MIX only credits transfer Courses SAC requires you to take at least one of your UH faculty resident’s courses Financing study abroad It is totally possible to study abroad without breaking the bank! Scholarships Be diligent with your schoolwork and extracurriculars so you can qualify for scholarships - Current Manoa scholarships should transfer and cover your semester/year abroad (e.g. New Warrior & STAR scholarships) - Global Opportunities Scholarship on STAR - SAC has scholarships for each program - ASUH Study Abroad (apply during semester abroad) - Business students: Freeman or Johnson Scholarship ($5,000) - External scholarships Part-time work Decide early if you can what semester/summer/year you want to study abroad in and start working/interning in the semesters and summers leading up to it Grants and loans Your Manoa grants and loans are often applicable to study abroad. Be sure to check beforehand if that is the case. Join the International Business Organization (IBO) to hear about other students’ experiences and attend informational sessions hosted by SAC and MIX. Applying for a SAC Program I am going abroad through UH SAC, so I’ll outline the Fall semester application and timeline here.
